What is a quarter? How many months are there in each quarter?

Time is a very important resource that is always in short supply. There's never enough of it. You always want there to be more of it.

People who know how to properly distribute this resource achieve a lot in their lives. Those who do not value time and waste it rarely achieve serious success. In order to complete any task on time, you need to assign a certain period of time during which it can actually be completed, and adhere to the established deadlines. Only by setting specific goals for yourself can you achieve your goals. What could be the time period? It can be different: a week, a month, a half-year, a year, etc. In this article we will talk about such a period as a quarter.

Interesting Facts

During the Soviet Union, in a number of industries the quarterly year did not coincide with the economic year (it began in October). This created enormous confusion in reporting, so over time the phenomenon disappeared.

Since division into quarters is most often used in accounting, a quarter is sometimes called a tax or reporting period. Due to the fact that at the end of each quarter it is necessary to submit reports, pay payments, issue or re-issue patents, contracts, etc.

In the word “kvartal” the stress is placed on the second syllable – “kvartal”. However, financial and statistical workers often pronounce “quarter”. This pronunciation is completely incorrect and is not confirmed by any dictionary.

Division into quarters is a long-established tradition throughout the world. It is of particular importance for the areas of reporting and accounting. It is also useful for people outside of these industries to know about this period of time, its purpose, and how many months there are in a quarter. This information will not only expand your general horizons, but will also help you avoid getting into ridiculous situations, because a block is not only a unit of time, but also the name of a row of houses from intersection to intersection in street architecture.

Why is this division of the year needed?

Typically, the “quarter” period is used in those institutions where it is necessary to prepare reports, for example in statistics or accounting.

This division allows you to bring documentation into the system, correctly draw up plans and monitor their implementation. The annual report, of course, is very important, but until the whole year has passed, quarterly reporting allows you to track how timely the assigned tasks are being accomplished. This makes it possible to adjust their implementation in time, if necessary, in order to reach the desired indicators at the end of the year. Reports are executed once a quarter. How many months it takes to complete a particular task determines the number of quarters allocated to each goal.

Tax paid depending on the tax regime

In Russia, all commercial organizations pay their tax depending on the tax regime they choose. However, only OSN and UTII are paid by organizations once a quarter. There are four payments and four reporting dates in a year. Also, the income tax of an organization located on the OSN can be paid once a month.

Thus, reporting on UTII is submitted on the twentieth day of the month following the reporting period according to the tax return form approved by order of the Federal Tax Service of the Russian Federation. This form is filled out in accordance with the regulations and submitted to the tax authority to which the organization is attached. Failure to submit or late submission entails an administrative penalty in the form of a fine.

The tax for OSN is paid once a quarter. There are three months in a quarter, therefore, an enterprise can also submit three tax returns per quarter, since the reporting period for this tax is not precisely specified. Organizations determine it independently. This declaration is mandatory for use; Order of the Ministry of Finance No. 55n approved its form.

Other special regimes submit tax reports only once a year, although they pay advance payments every 3 months.

Section 3

Section 3 must be completed for each insured person. Subsection 3.1 indicates personal data: TIN, SNILS, last name, first name and patronymic, date of birth, country of citizenship code (RF - 643), gender, document code (Appendix No. 6 to the Procedure), its series and number.

Column 010 is not filled in - code “1” is entered in it only when information is corrected or canceled.

Subsection 3.2.1 should indicate the amounts paid to this person for the last three months of the period. The following data is entered in the columns:

  • 130 – category code of the insured (Appendix No. 7 to the Procedure). Here new MS, HF and EKB codes appeared, which were mentioned above;
  • 140 – amount of remuneration paid;
  • 150 – amount subject to pension contributions;
  • 160 – amounts under civil contracts (included in line 150);
  • 170 – calculated amount of OPF contributions. It is calculated as the contribution base (column 150) multiplied by the tariff.

If the policyholder is a SME and pays the employee a salary above the minimum wage (12,130 rubles), two subsections 3.2.1 should be completed:

  • first in relation to payments within the minimum wage. The code “NR” is indicated, the amount is 12130 and the amount of contributions is 2668.6;
  • then in relation to payments exceeding the minimum wage. For example, if an employee’s salary is 55,000 rubles, then you should indicate: code “MS”, payment amount - 42870 and the amount of pension contributions at the 10% rate - 4287.

If the payment does not exceed the minimum wage, then subsection 3.2.1 is filled out as when calculating contributions at the basic tariff in the singular.

Subsection 3.2.2 is completed only by those employers who pay pension contributions at the additional rate.

Annex 1

The application is intended for calculating pension contributions and contributions to compulsory medical insurance.

Column 001 is intended to indicate the tariff code - it must be taken from Appendix No. 5 to the Procedure. SMEs with payments above the minimum wage fill out this application 2 times: with code “01” for the part of the payment within 12,130 rubles and with code “20” for the part exceeding this amount.

In subsection 1.1, you must indicate the number of insured persons, including those from whose payments contributions are calculated. The following indicates the amount of payments from the beginning of the billing period and for each of the last three months.

✐ Example ▼

For example, the company has 1 employee (director) with a salary of 55,000 rubles per month, there were no other payments. The total amount since the beginning of the billing period (2020) is 660,000 rubles. At the same time, at the basic tariff of 22% payments are subject to contributions:

  • entire salary for January-March – 55,000 * 3 = 165,000 rubles;
  • Salary within the minimum wage for April-December – 12130 * 9 = 109170 rubles.

Payments for April-December above the minimum wage are taxed at a reduced rate of 10%:

(55000 – 12130) * 9 = 385830 rubles.

Further in this subsection, in the same order (total from the beginning of the year and for the last 3 months) are reflected:

  • amounts not subject to contribution;
  • amounts to be deducted;
  • calculated base (including those exceeding the limit value);
  • the amount of contributions (including separately from the base within the limit and above it).

In subsection 1.2 of Appendix 1, medical contributions are calculated in a similar way. The difference is in the size of the tariff, and also in the fact that in this subsection there are no fields relating to amounts exceeding the maximum base value, since it is not established for medical contributions.

Appendix 2

Appendix 2 to Section 1 calculates contributions for illness and maternity. It is filled out similarly to Appendix 1 with a slight difference. Column 002 indicates the payment attribute depending on which scheme is used. These can be direct payments or an offset system.

In addition, the second page of Appendix 2 indicates the costs of paying insurance coverage and the amounts reimbursed from the Social Insurance Fund (under the credit system).

Reporting depending on the type of enterprise

State organizations not only submit reports to extra-budgetary funds on a quarterly basis. They are also required to submit financial statements every quarter. Their forms are approved by orders, but in most cases they are modified with additional lines for various explanations to the parent organizations.

Credit organizations must also report to the Bank of Russia and parent organizations. In addition, banks must provide reporting at the request of regulatory authorities.

Until 2013, all organizations submitted accounting (financial) statements quarterly to the tax authorities. But since two thousand and thirteen, such an obligation was abolished. Now there are no interim reports for tax authorities or statistical authorities, only annual ones. However, no one prohibits maintaining interim reporting and presenting it to management or founders.

Most joint stock companies even now prepare interim financial statements for their shareholders so that they can monitor the activities and profits of the enterprise, as well as distribute dividends.

The 2nd quarter of the year has just ended. There is still time to prepare for your annual financial statements. However, do not forget about reporting to other funds!

A little information about the upcoming 2020 - Year of the White Rat

The coming year 2021 will be ruled by the responsible, wise and thrifty animal White Rat, which means that it will favor those who skillfully handle and manage money, know how to earn it, take a responsible approach to their responsibilities and soberly look at the problems and challenges that fate throws up. But in general, whoever is not lazy during this period will receive good luck and gratitude in the form of good earnings, as well as successful career advancement with an increase in salary, and this will mainly apply to those who work individually.

The Rat is friendly with many people and loves to do a variety of things, which is reflected in the versatility of its nature. She is not averse to giving advice that is worth listening to, because this animal does not waste words, and her wise sayings are often prophetic. People born this year are kind, persistent and sympathetic; they are always ready to help relatives and friends, although they love to gossip about them. They get along well with others, know how to create a trusting environment, easily winning over their interlocutors.

Property tax

Company property tax is a regional tax, so you will not find deadlines for its payment in the Tax Code. But the legislation states that the reporting periods for this tax are quarters. This means that it is also quarterly. Exact data on its payment and reporting should be looked at in the regulations of a particular region. The declaration form is unified and is mandatory for use.

I would also like to note that previously property tax was paid only by organizations on special tax purposes. Starting from the third quarter of 2014, the government of the Russian Federation obliged organizations that are on UTII to calculate and pay it.

How many months are there in a quarter?

This term should not be confused with another similar concept “season”. After all, it is also equal to the fourth part of the calendar year. There are as many months in a quarter as there are in a season. But, unlike a season, which denotes 3 months of one season (spring, summer, winter and autumn seasons), a quarter is three months in order, one after another, not taking into account the time of year.

The beginning of the quarter count is the new calendar year. So, for example, the first quarter of the year consists of January, February and March - two months of winter and one of spring. And the first season - winter, begins a month before the onset of the new calendar year - in December and consists of three winter months. It is worth noting that not a single quarter coincides with the season.

An interesting fact: in the old days, the Slavs counted the New Year from the first month of spring - March. If a similar time calculation were used today, the quarter of the year and the season of the year would chronologically coincide completely and, perhaps, one of these concepts would be abolished.

Quarters are... Reporting for the 1st quarter. Second quarter

In turn, the act of reconciliation with the counterparty is the basis for interrupting the limitation period (letter of the Ministry of Finance dated July 19, 2011 No. 03-03-06/1/426). Therefore, the three-year period must be counted from the day on which the last reconciliation act dates.

This procedure can be carried out only for one of the following items: name or number of the product, contract, specific delivery, certain period of time. For this document to be reliable, it should be drawn up either after the last transfer or from the moment of delivery.

For convenience, the year is divided into quarters, according to which accountants prepare reports. Each quarter includes 3 months, they are called quarters. quarta means “fourth” in Latin.

Note! If the request was sent to the tax authority through your Personal Account on the Federal Tax Service website, the response will also be sent by email.

For codification, two-digit numbers are used, in which the first digit is 2, and the second determines the quarter number in chronological order. For example, the tax period code for the 2nd quarter of 2021 for the value added tax return will be “22”.

When drawing up a reconciliation report, organizations must take into account the obligations under the contract and the correctness of the amounts contained in the accounting records. In order to prepare a reconciliation, you will need primary documents such as contracts, delivery notes and invoices. The document must indicate the following information:

  • the period during which the calculations are reconciled;
  • details of the parties;
  • details of the agreement with the counterparty;
  • Full names of responsible persons, their signatures;
  • Settlement information of one and the other party for certain transactions.

What is a quarter

Quarters are periods of time that consist of three months, starting in January. Most often this term is used in the accounting department of any organization. It also means tax season. The first quarter consists of January, February and March, the second quarter - of April, May and June, the 3rd - July, August and September, the 4th - October, November, December.

Each of these periods means submitting reports to certain organizations, paying payments or losing the use of a certain special tax regime if the enterprise exceeds the legally established indicators. But let's deal with everything in order.

What it is?

The term “quarter” itself came from the Latin language through the mediation of German and is literally translated as “quarter”. Thus, from the very name of this period of time one can understand that a quarter is the fourth part of the year. That is, there are only four quarters in a year, which are designated by Latin numerals from one to four.

In English-speaking countries, the numbering of blocks is identical to Russian, but their graphic designation is different - using Arabic numerals, each of which is preceded by the Latin letter “Q”.

What is a quarter? How many months are there in each quarter?

Translated from Latin, this word means “quarter”. Accordingly, a quarter is ¼ of a year. Thus, it becomes clear that we have only four quarters in a year. Knowing that a year consists of twelve months, you can calculate the number of months in one quarter. How many months are there in each quarter of the year? Through simple mathematical calculations we arrive at the following: 12 / 4 = 3. In total, we have 4 quarters in a year, each of which has three months. Quarters are numbered with Latin numerals. In English-speaking countries, this time period is indicated by Arabic numerals. Each of them is preceded by the letter Q.
