Everything you need to know about working on a 2-by-2 schedule

A shift schedule is a document that approves the duration and frequency of shift rotation. It is not normatively approved, it is drawn up in any form - and therefore often raises questions from personnel officers. As an example, let's look at the watchmen's shift calendar (several options) and tell you how to implement it at an enterprise.

Shift work requires more detailed recording of working time. To eliminate overtime, a shift schedule or calendar is drawn up: art. 103 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation says it is impossible to oblige an employee to work two shifts in a row. In order to improve the efficiency of operations or the use of equipment, it is recommended to take the following measures:

  • increase the duration of the production process;
  • divide workers into groups;
  • distribute them among shifts;
  • a month before the introduction of such an operating mode, familiarize them with the schedule.

The latter will be an addition to the collective agreement.

The concept of a shift schedule

Shift work, 2/2 shift schedule - this, as many employers claim, is a very common mode. You need to work in two, three, four shifts, which are introduced if the duration of production processes is higher than permissible during daily work, as well as for the most efficient use of equipment and increasing production volumes. With the help of this mode, the uninterrupted operation of the organization is ensured. As a rule, to ensure this format, you need to organize 3 teams, sometimes 4.

Now that you know what a 2/2 work schedule is, let’s look at its features in more detail. The days of operation in this mode during the week will also differ from usual. When establishing a shift format in an organization, the employer must form several teams. They work in turns, which makes it possible to ensure a smooth process. If the institution is small, employees can work one at a time, replacing each other. This is possible in areas with simple processes. Answering the question: what is a 2-by-2 schedule? The main thing is to not allow an employee to work more than one shift in a row.

A two-by-two work schedule is one of the possible options for shift work. This algorithm is the most popular in practical activities.

A special feature of the regime is that the length of the working day goes beyond the 8 hours required for a five-day week. You must be present at the workplace both on weekdays and weekends. If an employee working in shift mode falls on a holiday, the work will be paid in a single amount. A duty period of 10 or 12 hours is not considered overtime, and no additional payments are established. All of these provisions are provided for within the framework of the employment agreement.

    Dear Raisa, in accordance with Articles 91 and Part 2 104 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, you have the right to set a schedule within 40 hours at your discretion. In case of deviation from the specified norm, you need to use summarized recording of working hours.

    Dear Roman, when recording working hours in aggregate, the employer must comply with the normal working hours. But with this mode of employment of employees, the employer is not based on the maximum working week of 40 hours; here the calculation is used within the accounting period established in the organization (month, quarter or year). The maximum number of working hours per year without overtime is 1,979, and this figure is worth focusing on.

      Dear Alexander, in accordance with Article 103 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, working two shifts in a row is prohibited. In your case, the following order is seen: day, day, night, night; accordingly, your right to daily (between shifts) rest (Article 107 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation) is violated when moving from the day shift directly to the night shift. If the situation looks like this: day (Monday), day (Tuesday), night (from Wednesday to Thursday), night (from Thursday to Friday), then such a schedule is possible with a summarized accounting of working hours.

      Dear Anna, How is your last proposal possible if, in accordance with Article 110 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, the duration of rest between the end of one shift and the beginning of the next should be twice the duration of the shift? That is, if in the question asked the shift duration is 12 hours, then the break should be 24 hours. And working for two days or two nights in a row with a break of only 12 hours violates the Labor Code of the Russian Federation. Your proposal is valid for an 8-hour shift with a 16-hour break.

If the schedule is 2/2, working day from 10:00 to 22:00, shift duration is 11 hours, lunch break is an hour, then the rest between shifts should be 24 hours, but we invite you to work after 12 hours. This is a violation, given that the employee then rests for 2 days

    Schedule 2/2 for 12 hours, minus 1 hour lunch. 2 days a night and two days a day. In the absence of a replacement (sick leave, vacation, time off), you have to replace him. We get overtime, we go out for such part-time jobs, but there is no additional payment, no additional day for vacation. At best, they will be paid through outstaffing. And in order to normalize the production calendar, they force you to leave much earlier on other, less busy days, although the specifics of the work are such that the workload is not evenly distributed throughout the day, and sometimes you work until 17:00 in the evening without a break for lunch. Is the employer obliged to pay double for all overtime, or provide a day for vacation then, what article is regulated, and how to achieve this without being fired from work?

      Dear Gennady, processing, i.e. Overtime work is paid for the first 2 hours at least one and a half times the regular rate, for subsequent hours (starting from the 3rd) at least double the rate. This amount of payment is established by the Labor Code of the Russian Federation. Payment for overtime may be more according to local regulations of the organization, but not less. At the request of the employee, instead of monetary compensation, a day of rest (time off) may be provided. It is provided on a 1:1 basis, that is, if a normal working day is 8 hours, the employee has worked overtime for 8 hours in total, then the employer is obliged to provide a full day of rest.

    Hello! I work a 2/2 to 12 hour schedule from 08:30 to 20:30 minus 1 hour for lunch, the employment contract specifies a salary rate of 36,000-13% = 31,320 rubles. November 5 I worked on a holiday. How much salary will I receive for November?

    Good afternoon, I work for government agencies, schedule 5/2 (Tuesday - Saturday) - Sunday, Monday is a day off. Opening hours: 8:00 to 18:00, lunch 14:00 to 15:00. Now, in such a difficult situation, we have been given a 2/2 schedule (we work from 8:00 to 22:00), there are no bonuses, and they don’t add salary either. They say that the report card was 5/2 and they pay (they are not going to change anything) what to do in such a situation?) thanks in advance

      Dear Yulia, To calculate the number of hours per month, you need 30: 5 * (the number of working days in a calendar month). For example, December 2021 has 22 working days. So, (30 : 5) * 22 = 132 hours.

    Hello. ADS dispatchers are transferred to a shift work schedule (two 12-hour days, two days off). Previously they worked night shifts, but now they don’t. How to correctly specify the operating mode in the order?

      Dear Maria, we advise you to register new working conditions in accordance with the provisions of Article 104 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation. We cannot offer you the exact wording, since we do not know what system you use to record working hours.

    I work 2/2 from 8:00 to 20:00. The employer began to require me to go to additional work on my days off from December 15 until the new year. Is this legal? It turns out that it’s half a month without days off and the employment contract is not given to anyone.

      Dear Vera, no, such a requirement is illegal. In accordance with Art. 354 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, you can complain about the actions of the employer to the State Labor Inspectorate.

      Dear client, your question cannot be answered without understanding how the shift schedule is formed at the enterprise and how the work schedule is organized. You can address it to the HR department of the enterprise. Generally speaking, the standard working hours may vary depending on the month due to the presence of holidays. The calculation of standard working hours for 2021 is regulated by Order No. 588n of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of Russia dated August 13, 2009.

    We work on a schedule of 2 through 2. 8 hours on weekdays and 6 hours on Saturday. On Sunday 5 hours. In terms of the number of hours it turns out to be less than 40 hours a week, but also less than half-time. The question is how to properly register employees.

    Good afternoon Please tell me, with schedule 2-2, the employment contract should include wages and schedule 2-2?! The employer writes schedule 5-2 even though we work 2-2 and it’s the same for the entire team, the wage regulations do not show and they even pay overtime due to standard hours, that is, it underestimates real working hours

      Dear Ksenia, regarding the salary regulations, your employer may not formalize it if all the terms of remuneration are described in employment contracts with employees or in a collective agreement, and also if all employees work under conditions that exclude any deviations from the usual ones, in particular, do not work overtime, night shifts or holidays. Regarding the schedule, the employer is obliged to inform the employee of the monthly shift schedule no later than one month before it comes into effect, and you must work exactly according to the schedule provided for review.

    Good afternoon Please tell me, for 2021 we have been given a shift schedule of 2 every 2 for 12 hours, sometimes it costs 3rd or even 4th shifts in a row, is this legal? And the second question does 1972 hours include vacation days for this year?

      Dear Sergey, the Labor Code (Part 5 of Article 103) establishes a ban on working for two shifts in a row. By virtue of Part 1 of Art. 21, part 2 art. 22 and Art. 107 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, an employee must be provided with daily (between shifts) rest. You can contact the Labor Inspectorate.

    We have a standard of 36 hours per week; due to production needs, we were transferred to a 2x2 shift schedule of 12 hours. As a result, one week is 36 hours, the other is 48. Is the employer obliged to pay for hours in excess of the norm established for the month for a 36-hour week.
